Jack M. and Tom Manson posted comments on the plastic cover under the front of
the engine.   I also considered removing it.  However, when I saw some of the
rocks that were embedded in the plastic, I left it on.  Better to get a few
nicks in the plastic than to puncture an oil pan (even if the chance of this
happening is low).  

BTW, didn't we read a story a year or two ago by someone (Mike S. ?) who was
in a rally, hit a rock on a dirt road, and had a major puncture somewhere
underneath?
