I carry my R7 whitewater kayak on top of Baby sometimes.  My bike rack (a
Thule RMS) sits at the same height as the windshield header. Put a bar
across where the bike top tube goes, and rest the kayak on that and the
whindshield frame.  I pad the frame, tie my boat down to the rack and to the
front tiedown hooks.  Stu Ackerman used to carry a kayak as well, if my
memory serves me.  It needs to be tight, and don't try to blitz your
favorite onramp, but it works.  Just remember to drain the kayak VERY well
before you put it on - they pee all over your at the first corner :).  This
also works for windsurfers.  I have photographic evidence!
