At the risk of jinxing myself and having this noise return, I will
say that it went away by itself, after about 150 miles, which is
the same result that Rich Fozzard had with this symptom. 

I suspect a rock got caught between the brake shield and the rotor
and  that it was  kicked around on right turns. The noise stopped
one morning, and then came back that evening, so I pulled the 
front wheel, but found no stones. When I put it back together,
the sound was gone again. I gave it a thorough test, and my 
neighbors are glad that I'm done.. They didn't appreciate a Miata
going around and around in the wrong direction (clockwise) in the cul-de-sac.
