I've been using the same technique Paul's using for a long time.
On top of that this is what I do:

1.  get liability only for the beater.
2.  get rid of medical (do this only if you have health insurance)
3.  insure miata as recreational vehicle AND driven less than 7500 mi/yr
    (between not driving in the rain and car pooling with wife made this worked)

Incidentally, it's a myth that your rate will go down when you get marry.
My rate certainly didn't,  but of course, I am not giving them a lot of
margin.
