a minor added note on Jack M.'s Fangio story...   i read a similar story once 
but i think someone else was driving.  in any case, after shunting the car and 
with Fangio lying unconscious in the ditch, the driver of the other vehicle 
looked at Fangio's driver and said, "Who the hell do you think you are?  Juan 
Manuel Fangio?"  to which the first driver replied, pointing at his 
unconscious companion in the ditch, "No, but he is."  my guess is this was one 
of Rob Walker's articles in Road & Track, and Rob may have been the driver.

the point is that a lot of us have our Walter Mitty dreams of driving the 
Nurburgring and dicing with Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart (i guess that tells 
you my age), and that's all well and good.  but acting out your dreams on 
crowded freeways with a lot of civilians is not very bright.  having sustained 
major injuries in a shunt once (as a passenger) when we weren't even doing 
anything reckless, i'd much rather drive safely and sanely and spend my time 
in my Miata than in a cast.
