Thank you, > > Tom Reynolds/STRIDER86@aol.com > > As of Dec. 6th,Montana State is going back to 'reasonable and proper' speed. That will be left to the descretion of the highway patrol. The sta= te only has jurisdiction on the state highways, which means all the back roa= ds, the ones without shoulders or fairly wide lanes. On the bright side there= are a great number of very entertaining roads in the state. Such as the highway between Browning and Choteau. A 100 mile stretch of open hilly country side with a roller coaster constructed of good pavement. There is= the stretch on the east side of Glacier National Park, only to be run aft= er tourist and bicycle season. The road from Plains to St. Regis in the southwest is a good ride. On the east side try the short cut from Red Lod= ge to the freeway west of Billings. And if you want a real thrill, continue = on from Red Lodge over the Cook City Highway which includes a switchback section over the 10,000ft pass. = The down side to safe drivers is that if the patrolman doesn't agree with your speed you will be cited for 'reckless driving'. Expensive= in fines and insurance. So watch your speed, especially when weather is not = the best. That means you can be doing 45 on the open road on ice and still ge= t a ticket. (probably not but possible). Actually the patrolmen are quite lenient and sympathetic to those out to 'run' their cars. Remember when you are ready to move here, that it is great fun to= drive, but be prepared to replace a windshield and a couple headlights a year. They will be sacrificed to the small boulders our highway departmen= t nicknames as 'sand'. The 'sand' will total your paint, and destroy the airdam in front. Most drivers here now refuse to replace the driving or f= og lamps under the bumper, they just lose them to rocks again. Keep a sharp = eye out for deer, elk, or worse a cow. They can make the front end of your M3= look like it went through the trash compactor. And then you have to give= the cow to the farmer or the deer to the state. One more fact. I know 2 bimmer owners who manage to keep their ca= rs in immaculate shape. . . . they are garaged from Oct. 1 to May 31!! =0D Come to Montana - where the great roads don't have speed limits anymore. =0D Alan '85 M535 =0D PS - Tom, all 'drivers' who live in Montana, and especially those of us lucky enough to grow up here, love the state and the twisty, windy and sometimes dangerous roads. Increased population and a safety minded highw= ay department are taking some of those adventures away from us. But this is still the best place I know for driving fun. = =0D ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- =46rom stmkt@cyberport.net Sun Dec 3 01:35:16 1995 Return-Path: stmkt@cyberport.net Received: from cpmt2.cyberport.net (cpmt2.cyberport.net [204.94.49.4]) by= emin05.mail.aol.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id BAA22966 for; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 01:35:15 -0500 Received: from localhost (stmkt@cpmt2.cyberport.net [204.94.49.4]) by cpmt2.cyberport.net (8.6.9/8.6.9) with SMTP id XAA26561 for ; Sat, 2 Dec 1995 23:35:09 -0700 Date: Sat, 2 Dec 1995 23:35:09 -0700 Message-Id: <199512030635.XAA26561@cpmt2.cyberport.net> X-Sender: stmkt@cpmt2.cyberport.net X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Version 1.4.4 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"us-ascii" To: STRIDER86@aol.com From: stmkt@cyberport.net (Alan Schmautz) Subject: Re: Montana speed limits =0D --PART.BOUNDARY.0.870.emout05.mail.aol.com.817998535--
