Pete: I have used several hardtops without the side clamps. I don't think you have any danger of the top flying off, but the side clamps do make the top more secure and make the car seem tighter in the bumps. As far as hardtop color combinations go, I had a white top on Sunkist (the orange Miata) and a red top on my blue Miata. I sold the white top to a fellow with a BRG car who lived in Palm Desert and he hoped it would help keep the interior cool. Also, I have a friend who has a BRG top on a yellow Miata. BTW, none of the above Miatas had the side latches. Skip Cannon.
