Anyway, the theory goes that Miata drivers have a Pinto in there background. Is this true? I do know that I did love my old throw-a-way Pintos. And am proud to say the one I liked best, was the old Pinto Station Wagon 1980. Also, I have seen posts from people in DC with thre top down this time of year. I to have tried this, but ended up with the flu for two weeks. Shawn >From archive-owner Tue Jan 2 00:51:18 1996 From: Mark Ow Subject: Jackson Racing Cold Air tips Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 00:49:37 -0500 As a "newbie", I wanted to pass along a few things I learned installing the JR Cold Air Induction system on my 92' black/tan. The context of this is that I bought the kit "slightly used" from a good friend who has a Sebring super installed. The kit as a whole is very complete, the pictures really need help though. The attachment to the airbox (4 bolt holes w/square intake hole) had small cracks in the plastic where the washers dug in. I fashioned a backing plate out of sheet metal. A dremel tool with a cut off wheel made cutting the square hole very easy. I put a little silicon on to stick it to the plastic and voila, it was very sturdy and should hold up much better. The relocation of the hood rod by disconnecting the cruise control cable brace near the brake proportioning valve required that the rod be bent so much that the hood was very low. I made an L shaped bracket and used the bolt that currently holds a metal vacuum hose against the firewall. I cut the square hole in the bracket again with the dremal tool to accept the nylon clip. The 3rd "improvement" I made was using rubber-backed washers under the screws which hold the top cover of the housing in place. These put less stress on the plastic yet hold very nicely. The improvement of the system has been wonderful for the mid to high end range of the car. You really feel it on the freeway. Thanks again for the tips through the list. Happy Miata new year ! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Santa brought me a new Robbins top with a glass rear window. I am so stoked!!! Of course now this means the hubby and I will install it this weekend. He is a reasonably capable car guy and I read instructions well ("oops, did I mention they say you should do that part first before you do the other thing that I just told you to do right before we heard that nasty snapping/tearing noise?" ), but I thought it would be wise to solicit the help of the list. Have any of you folks out there installed one of these things and are there are any pitfalls we should be aware of, or little tidbits of knowledge you could pass on that perhaps don't appear in the instructions, but would be of help to first time Miata soft-top installers? There are some situations that are beyond correction, like this one. (Techie term for tail coming out when you lift the throttle: trailing throttle oversteer) Unless you are in immediate danger of occupying an already occupied space, you're better off continuing to keep lightly on the gas, don't do any radical steering stuff, and hope the hell it's over soon! (This is an easy one because you don't have to brake)If you can master double clutching while braking, you should join the Bolshoi. Definitely a useful technique, but a real bugger to learn! Why are Mustangs rotten winter cars? Way too much torque. Even though Miatas are not known as possessing a surplus of torque, any car can break loose under icy conditions. Keeping my Miata in a low RPM range, and out of the torque band keeps me from inadvertantly snapping the back end out. (This does, however, spoil my fun) I'm ice racing this year, and all of quickest cars seem to have electric carving knife sized motors.(Here's a good use for your old Yugo! :-) In a rear wheel driver, it's always a battle to keep the rear nailed down. I've seen guys stick cinder blocks, old engine parts, wet sand, etc. in the trunk to get more grip. Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 00:50:17 -0500 I took a peek this past weekend at the Miataville section on compuserve and saw a rather long thread involving Norm Garrett on the 18 degree (BTDC) advance that he started in the last (Fall) issue of the Miata mag. It seems that most of the 1.6L users who have advanced to 18 degrees (all on 92 or 93 octane fuel) have not had problems with pinging and have have been quite ecstatic with the change. However, the database for 1.8L users was very sparce and there was one mention of pinging (this might have been a missetting to 20 degrees or more). Question: Has anyone with a 1.8L engine advanced their timing to 18 degrees and if so what has your experience with pinging been? On which octane rated fuel? Not from the holidays! It appears that Lightning picked up a bad tank of petrol (for you non-US types) the other day. A few miles after filling up, I was cruising along highway and felt a misfire and saw the tach blip. Sure enough, as I drove further it happened again, and then more often. When it misses, it feels like it's running out of gas (I unfortunately know how that feels), more like a whole cycle is missed, vs. a single cylinder. It happens occasionally, but isn't repeatable. Sometimes happens on acceleration, other times it's just fine. Most times it's just while I'm cruising along and it's a single missed pulse, but sometimes it's several and sounds (and feels) terrible! I've now run a tank and a half of new gas, a bottle of gas dryer and a bottle of Techroline through it over a few hundred miles. I've also replaced the spark plug wires (I'm at 28K miles) and pulled the plugs, which looked clean, with a light coating of soot. My next step is to check my MSD connections (I've disabled the SC already, to try to isolate it and the AFPR) I still think it was the gas, but am surprised that I haven't burned through the shitty stuff yet. Thought I'd check the wisdom on the 'net for further suggestions. Is it possible (relatively easy) to drain the gas tank, in case there's some really big crap in there that's fouling the fuel pickup? I'll probably replace the plugs (they only have 10K miles on them) just 'cause they're cheap and easy (I like 'em like that). I can't think of anything else that would be bad (it's either fuel or spark), 'cept maybe the ECU, and it doesn't act like that. Could the unique dual coil ignition make one bad plug act like two bad plugs? I'm a DIY guy and hope I don't have to resort to a service provider, but if this ends up costing me $$ and it was the gas, I'm gonna raise some hell at the gas station!! Thanks for any help! 2) Spark Plugs - The Mazda book gives three different heat options for spark plugs. I understand that I shouldn't use Splitfires, since they may run too hot on a 'charged car. I'm currently running the NGK xxx6xx plug, installed by the dealer. Should I run the coldest plug, assuming that the 'charger will keep things sufficiently hot? (Convention says 'hot rodders' use hotter plugs to get more power) 3) Installed the MotorSport adjustable sway bars (front & rear) a few months ago. Like the firmness, but the car seemed to feel a bit looser in the corners, tending toward oversteer (eek!). Since I can ALWAYS induce oversteer with throttle I adjusted the front bar for more understeer and it feels a lot better now. Anyone else have these - where do you have them set? 4) Lightning's stocking was EMPTY this Christmas! :-( Guess I'll have to take advantage of the after Christmas sales so she doesn't feel bad... But we DID go on a several hundred mile trip yesterday, gifts in the trunk, top down and Santa hat on (me). Several honks and waves - the truckers seemed to get a kick out of it. Don't know how cold it was, but hat, scarf, heavy leather jacket, gloves and heater on full made it comfortable. Hat's on (too cold to have them off) to you guys in the cold climates. Any esperience/suggestions? BTW: Have noticed articles in paper that Major Insurerers will/have dropped discount for owners of ANTI-LOCK brake equipped cars. Claim experience has proved to be no difference (read less) for anti-lock brake equipped cars. The theory is that since people are not used to the pulsating sensation that one feels when they activate, that people defreat them by trying to pump the brakes or take their foot off because of the unatural feeling. The correct way, of course, it to apply pressure and maintain it (read STOMP on it and HOLD it in in an emergency). I have a '94 base with the steel wheels and a relatively new set of D60A2s. When my foot is on the throttle a strange tapping sound comes from what sounds like (from the pilot's seat) the right front wheel. However it only happens when the car is under power. If I lift my foot off the gas, the sound stops. If I put the clutch in and let the car coast out of gear, the sound stops. But put my foot back on the pedal and nudge it the tiniest bit, and the sound returns. The frequency of the "tapping" doesn't change either. Whether I'm crawling along in first or cruising on the highway, the number of taps per minute (TPM?) seems to be pretty constant. I've eliminated my 2 month old Dunlops as possible suspects. Since the sound only happens when power is applied and at the same frequency regardless of speed I think they are not the culprits. But if not them, what? The sound is certainly coming from what sounds like the passenger front tire/wheel. And why only when power, even the slightest bit, is applied? I'm sure there is somebody out there who has some sort of idea. As usual he delivered action scenes only he can deliver - lots of fighting as well as some wonderful racing scenes. :) I won't tell the story so someone who's his fan can find out himself/herself - basically his character is a ex-racer who caught some top notch car racer baddye and ends up racing with him in Japan. As his fan already know Jackie Chan always use lots and lots of Mitsubishi cars. Ok, so I hear you say what on earth this bonehead is babbling about if there is no Miata. :) Well, you see, in the beginning he was in Japan undergoing racing driver training or sort at Mitsubishi and when he's on the test track, there's a Eunos Roadtser - I think it was Satelite Blue special edition - and towards at the end of the movie on the final race course, you can see quite clearly Work's Anhelo aero-kit-bolt-on Eunos Roadster racer. There are lots of fantastic race scenes - roll over, burst into fire and etc. There's even one scene where his car flying through the big notice board. Another interesting scene was where his and baddye's cars - Mitsubishi 3000GT and Nissan GT-R - were trapped on pebble filled area outside circuit course. I thought both cars are 4WD but they had hell of time to get out - Jackie's car gets out using reverse and actually finished the race first going reverse while his opponent was going straight in racing GT-R! :P Overall, quite enjoyable movie and great to see on the big screen - I mean on my dad's wide projection screen with full surround sound system. :) I guess it'll be way better on the real big screen. Ah, there's also some fantastic car chase scene between Jackie Chan's FTO and baddie's black-no-number-plate-&-smoke-tinted GT-R on the Hong Kong's freeway at night. These are all actual footage without any camera tricks - I think Jackie Chan never use camera trick for dangerous stunt and that's one of reason why his action is so real - because it's real although after many hours of practice. (Call me paranoid but I haven't had my top slashed yet.) :) So I though since only reason I need the head unit is to control my 12 CD stacker and listen to the weather/traffic broadcast and my Pioneer unit can be controlled by its remote entirely, why not to put it some other place and use the remote to control. (BTW if I do that, I'm loosing the ability to play a CD and clock but hey, I have already 12 CDs back in trunk and I can always watch my wrist watch - I'm wearing in on my right wrist.) And I'm think of using that 2.5DIN space for the secondary instrument panel with power window toggle switches and other assorted switches - emergency power cut off and starter for example. :) (I'm giving serious thought about removing the centre console plastic trim entirely and put some thick carpet instead - ala M2 1028.) For starter, I know PIVOT makes a starter kit that can be interfaced directly with most Japanese cars. The hard part is where am I gonna put the head unit! The glove box is, for obvious reason, out of question. Also the head unit need to be in front area of car so the remote can be work. Any good idea? Dennis (^_^; P.S. Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 00:56:02 -0500 A few people asked for this information a few months ago and due to school and work, I am just now getting a chance to respond. I no longer have the list of interested parties, and am copying the general list in case others are interested: I have an alternate solution to the 'I left my parking lights on again' syndrome. In the interest of maintaining a stock configuration, I avoid wire cuts/splices at all cost. I wanted to use the key in ignition buzzer to double as the light minder. To acomplish this, I installed a diode and a short piece of wire between the key reminder switch pin of the existing buzzer (Blu/Yel wire at F-57) and the red/blk wire of the fog light connector (I-03). (wire and diode are wedged into the back side of the connectors. Now if I leave the key in the ignition or leave the parking lights on, the stock buzzer will sound. The installation is very clean and effective, and is similar to the flash to pass diode mod. I have had this on my car for about 4 years, on my wife's car for about 3, and have added it to a number of local club member's cars. No problems noted to date. This change has saved me from returning to a dead battery on more than one ocaision, hope it helps others too. It's been awfully quite last several days and made me wondering whether the server is down. Anyway, I just heard a sad news from my relatives in Japan. Apparently one of her mate rolled over his Eunos Roadster and it doesn't have the roll bar - it did have the hard top at the time of roll over though. Aside all those money he spent on his car, the sight was not pretty and he's in the hospital now. The hard top was reduced almost in half of its original height and the windshield was severely bent at one corner. She told me he was doing somewhere between 130 KPH when he lost the control and hit the guard rail and rolled over - and it's raining! This news prompted my deci
