I took a peek this past weekend at the Miataville section on compuserve and saw a rather long thread involving Norm Garrett on the 18 degree (BTDC) advance that he started in the last (Fall) issue of the Miata mag. It seems that most of the 1.6L users who have advanced to 18 degrees (all on 92 or 93 octane fuel) have not had problems with pinging and have have been quite ecstatic with the change. However, the database for 1.8L users was very sparce and there was one mention of pinging (this might have been a missetting to 20 degrees or more). Question: Has anyone with a 1.8L engine advanced their timing to 18 degrees and if so what has your experience with pinging been? On which octane rated fuel? Robb Wolov & Raven ('95 Black and Tan) still at 10 degrees on 87 octane
