I was talking to Keith Tanneer the other day, and we discovered independently that there is a difference between hard shifting and a slight crunch when going from 1st to 2nd in cold weather. His won't shift and mine crunches (fortunately for me, anyway). Once again my trusty '95 Tech Issue has come to the rescue (honest, I don't work for these people) It says that Miatas made before April 1, 1991, may have insufficient clearance between the 2nd gear synchonizer ring and the 1-2 clutch hub (whatever that means). So if yours won't or will barely shift, they say to refer your dealer to Service Bulletin #004/92 issued on 7/7/92. If it just crunches, they say to try Redline MTL. See you at Miata '96.
