I disagree with this school of thought and align my self with the previous.

In the parking area of our office building, I park my car where I can see 
i from my office window (I know not everybody has that advantage) and I 
leave my doors unlocked with the alarm.  Then I HOPE that they will try 
doors before they cut the top so that they attract attention before they 
start the dirty deed of slashing.

I do agree that there will be cases where damage is done for spite and 
not gain, but I think that will depend on the environment where your car 
is parked.  There are distinct areas where thieves will be attracted to a 
lot of expensive cars potentially filled with valuables.  There are also 
areas where you will find folks that are really jealous of your good 
taste and your ability to satisfy it.  The best defense is to think about 
where you're parking your car.
