Maybe I'm not remembering my >sample rates to data space conversion, but I am pretty sure that (with modern >compression routines) 1 minute <> 10Mb, so 5 seconds <> 800Kb. After all, if >your numbers are right, how can a DiscMan provide a *10* second buffer on a >portable unit? RAM's not exactly big, physically. The 10Mb/min is a general rule of thumb - sampled at 44.1 kHz, 16 bit, in stereo. Another way to look at it is that a CD-ROM can carry around 640 Mb, and as an audio CD, it'll hold about 72 minutes (this can be increased by decreasing the space between the tracks, but that's cheating) . It's not exactly 10 Mb/min, but that's a handy round number. This does not use the compression techniques used in MiniDisc players, by the way - the full spectrum of sound remains. To double-check for you, I just sampled a full minute of audio at CD quality, and it came to 10,4221.1 Kb for 60.50 seconds. There's your 10 Mb/min.
