Hey Steve -- I'd be very interested in what they tell you. I know my 1990 had the straps... I have a '96 now and have a black boot ( yet I have the leather package with tan top) -- im waiting for my new tan boot to come in from 'back order' I too asked about the straps -- I remember when I didnt use the straps that it would flap about. The parts guy acted like he never heard that before, yet put (in quotes) with straps on the order form. We had one whole day of sun here (SF bay area) on saturday and I put the boot on -- boy, it was a tuff one to do ! the lip on the boot was very difficult to fit under the ledge on the car, where it's suppose to go. It either came right off (didnt fit) or went (and stayed) on after 'rolling' it on.... The older one wasnt that hard ! it just worked... I guess it's the 'new design'. Can anyone else talk about that ? is mine defective or does it need to be broken in ? I hope the new one is better (whenever I get it) I think I will just sew straps in it if they dont have them. Of course they had "never seen a boot with straps" as indicated in owner's manual. They copied page f/owner's manual and said they would call Mazda. If they won't help, fortunately Kansas has a fairly active consumer protection division within the attorney general's office. More Later Steve H.
