I can't think of any car which had a meaningful lifespan that, in its old age, didn't gain weight, amenities, and sluggishness. Even the lowly X-1/9 (Bertone) as small as it was became "soft" in its old age. As soon as the Mazda folks saw the demographics of the Miata owners I can't blame them for 'luxurizing" the Miata. A lot more profit is made on a loaded car than a base model, thus the impetous to move the Miata upmarket. The downside is that the original intent of the car, a light, nimble sportscar gets pushed aside. I applaud the concept of a "light" version of the Miata, kinda a Super R model. How are the R models selling anyways? Certainly not as well as the more "equipted" versions. While I enjoy my base model for its simplicity I occationally contemplate some of the amenities such as PW, PM, etc. (I swear, a temporary weakness) My next Miata will have "some" added features (never AC, sweat's good for ya) but the real changes will be in the "go" dept. As much as we all like to drool over the "racer replicas" for real world use. Come on, even million dollar Ferraris have air conditioning and stereos! A special version of the Miata for those who like a racer-like limited edition would give us something to admire and make us feel good getting into our real Miatas. You can't blame anyone for the direction the Miata is headed (Z3 neighborhood) lets just hope Mazda doesn't forget to pay respect to the origin. The Miata will be 10 yrs old before we even know it and it already has an extremely healthy following. Keep up the good work, Mazda. Dave 95 Red (please no comments from Po'd Fiat owners, I would have like a X 1/9 but it was too big, so I got a Midget :) dreamdesign e-mail dreamdsn@teleport.com home page http://www.teleport.com/~dreamdsn
