Someone was wondering whether or not a rear view mirror was 
manditory.

For those in Ontario, you can legally drive without your rear view 
mirror as long as you have side mirrors.  

Reference Ontario Highway Traffic Act (Them guys bible)

Sect 48-1b
a mirror or mirrors securley attached to the vehicle, and placed in 
such a position as to afford the driver a clearly reflected view of 
the roadway in the rear, or of any vehicle approaching from the rear.

So if you have side mirrors its cricket!!
