    One way to prevent the static shock when getting out of your car; before 
moving out of the seat, open the door, reach to your left (on left-hand drive 
cars), and touch or hold onto the metal bracket the door latch closes on.  
Continue touching the bracket as you get out of the car and any static charge 
will drain off to electrical ground and you will not get shocked.  This works 
well at preventing electrical arcs.
