To clean my soft top (I have two convertibles, one of which has a white top), I use a nylon bristled brush made for fine brushing of a horse's coat. I swiped it from my daughter's tack box. For a cleaning agent I use glycerine-based saddle soap (also "borrowed" from my daughter). This gets out the embedded dirt but is gentle on the vinyl ... and it leaves my hands all nithe and soft. You can buy both at any tack store or saddlery. And -- surprise, surprise -- they're cheaper than car-related stuff. FWIW.
