I wouldn't recomend putting a non-gel cel battery in a Miata. While it may work well in day to day driving, there is always the possibility of that mini van in your rear end. Wouldn't want to end up like a Ford Pinto. I went to Sears, and after several measurements and capacity checks, ( and making sure the new battery has vents) I got a Delco Freedom battery - 535 CGA 55-60S Part no. 2284XX68. The X's are either 3's and/or 9's, the crease in my reciept goes right throught the part number (of course). Cost - $57. This battery fits fairly well in the battery tray (not perfect, but good enough), it has side vent-hose connections for battery gases, and it's now 1.5 years old with no problems. I was cautious about having the thing tip over and spill, since it's not a gel-cell, so I got some very thick foam and put the foam between the battery top and the inside of the fender. This sounds clumsy, but it secures the battery well, and relieves concern about "interior dings". They say the battery won't spill even if it tips over, but who wants to find out! They might moan about how they can't give you a warranty because "Its not the right battery for your car", so just ask for the battery by model, and tell them never mind when they repeatedly ask "What's the make and model".
