Happy Miata Easter, Everyone! Sorry for the delay on getting details out to everyone on our NY Miata Adventure. It was hectic with our officers meeting the evening of our return and my son had been home on leave for 36 hours and I hadn't even seen him yet. So I neglected my Miata friends and have been spending time with him before he heads off to Norfolk (his new duty station). Hope you all understand. I believe you may have gotten a preview of what I'm writing about the new Miata M Coupe in USA Today on Thursday and probably in this morning's papers. But here it goes! First I'd like to say that the owners of the Del-Val Miatae we brought in to assist Mazda with the press release had an awesome time. Some mentioned it was the highlight of Miata ownership to have been able to participate in an event such as this. I agree wholeheartedly! There was nothing better than seeing ANDI JO lined up with ten other Miata friends with a plaque identifying her and her owner at a press release (and, yes, we took tons of pictures). But more personal experiences will be saved for later as I'm sure other List members who participated (Jyri Virkki, Dave Thomas, Stan Endlich and Ken Warren) will have more to add. The Miata M Coupe concept car sports a gorgeous yellow mica color reminding me of pearl yellow and has a flowing roofline which necessitated the reshaping of the rear decklid. The new decklid, along with the relocation of the spare tire to beneath the trunk, give the M Coupe substantially more trunk space than the Miata today. (I teased Tom Matano that he liked ANDI JO so much out at Rock 'n Roll that he had to put features such as my Candoo Loud and Momo Racing Pedals on this baby!) Also the sloped roofline adds more space to the rear cockpit area for luggage, etc and the addition of the rear brake light in the window rather than on the trunk. The door cutline sweeps upward in a graceful arc, similar to the lines on the RX-7 and the M Speedster concept car. I love the lines of this baby! It looks much the same as the Miata today with the lines that many of us have been waiting for. Other features are pop-up low-profile quad headlights (yes, they are Brainstorm's), cross-drilled brake rotors, 16-inch alloy wheels (five double spokes resembling Borbet's new Type M -- real nice) with Dunlop SP8000 performance tires and a free-flow exhaust (no, it's not a Candoo). Oh, almost forgot! It has pearl charcoal aerodynamics underneath in front and back! Real cool! Underneath the hood is the 1.8 litre engine -- no changes here. Inside the M Coupe is breathtaking too! The seats are covered with fabric in the center and suede-like fabric on the sides that you don't want to stop caressing! On each seatback is a yellow embroidered "M" logo (which showed up great in my pictures). Also, there's a leather and aluminum shift knob and charcoal carpeting covering the floor and rear cargo area (really nice!). And, as I mentioned before, my Momo racing pedals! :-) You've got to see this one! I'm not a fan of coupes, but Tom assured me if put into production the convertible would have the same lines. The Coupe is only meant as an option for those not wanting the wind in their hair! So head over to the Jacob Javits Center by April 14th to see this one in person! It's truly beautiful!
