Rick,

Car manufacturers always recommend soft settings for comfort, rather
than handling.

40 PSI is very high, but I am unfamiliar with autocross or other motor
sport conditions.

In all my cars, I have found that around 30-35 PSI drives very nicely,
and isn't too uncomfortable. This ties in with the recommendation of the
guy I bought my last set of tyres from, of 33 at the front and 31 at the 
back.
That is my current setting, and it is very good.
