Bret, I'd go with your second option. If you're an audiophile, you'd want to "see" your source of sound in front of you, right? Frankly, I find headrest speakers to be OTT as far as in-car hi-fi is concerned - no offense to headrest speaker lovers out there. It's just like I would like THX-Dolby Digital-SDDS-DTS-Whatever theatre sound when I watch a movie but not when I catch the 10:30pm news on TV. Get a decent power amp and a good pair of co-axials. If you can afford it, component speakers will give you better sound staging as the position of the tweeters is variable. If everything is set up nicely, you'd be able to hear your music as 90mph, although you'll have more wind noise to contend with the faster you go. Remember that if you want really good sound, it may be wiser to spend your money on your home hi-fi set up. Concentrate more on the handling of the car - that's why you bought a Miata, right?
