There must be something Zennish about tree-lined roads in Southern Indiana. And birds. I was coasting out of a little Southern Indiana neighborhood onto one of them there winding Southern Indiana roads in my silver '92 when, out of bushes on either side of the street, a huge flock of brilliant yellow goldfinches lept into view. Suddenly they were everywhere, maybe 50 of them, pacing the car. The tiny birds were in front of and behind the car, hovering over the passenger's seat, even one up under the rear-view mirror over the dashboard for a fleeting second. They flew along in a swirling cloud of golden glitter for however long it takes a jaw to drop, then disappeared as quickly as they'd arrived. I figure it was a case of one fleet, graceful, streamlined creature paying homage to another.
