The first 1000 miles is going to do the final polishing on a lot of parts, which means lots of microscopic bits of mostly metal in the oil. When I did the oil on my '96 a few weeks back at the 1000 mile change, it was pretty ugly. Next time (at ~4000), I expect it'll still look like new oil.
