Mike, I've just completed doing a lot of research on auto security alarms for my Miata. The major "wants" recommended were a starter/ignition disable (similar to a kill switch) , fault proof / false alarm proof shock sensor, and dual zone adjustible dopplar radar intrusion sensor, anti-code grabbing with random encryption, and auto-arming. The insurance companies like the auto-arming feature 'cause having an alarm but forgetting to use it doesn't do anyone any good. The disable feature is likewise high on insurance company preferences. The intrusion sensor is tailor made for convertibles. Extras like pin switches for the hood, doors and trunk, remote start, etc have little utility for the Miata. Some companies offer a theft guarentee ranging up to $3000 (be sure to read how your insurance deductible may factor in here though). I ended up ranking the Intelliguard 800-IQ (or it's upscale "talking" brother the IntelliVoice-IQ) from Clifford as tops for installed units and the Bulldog Security 3001 with PRO1000 and IIS-D2 sensor options as tops for a do-it-yourself install. There are of course many other good choices. These are just what I felt to be top drawer. -=[Bob Allman]=- ---------- From: miata To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: car alarm advice Date: Tuesday, June 04, 1996 11:52AM There's a thread of e-mail going on here at work about car break-ins in the parking garage. (We share a garage with what's essentially a shopping mall, and I think most break-ins are crimes of opportunity.) The idea of a car alarm is seeming more attractive. Somebody recently mentioned an Alpine model. If I go looking for something like that, is there anything I should be aware of (or afraid of :0 ) when I visit car alarm/stereo shops? Is there anything about the Miata (other than its innate Divinity) that brings up special alarm installation issues? (My other option is to always park near one of the Porsche 911's that live in the garage, hoping a would-be theif would prefer the more expensive vehicle :-) ______c_____________________________________________________________________ Mike M Nally * Tiv^H^H^H IBM * Austin TX * pain is inevitable m5@tivoli.com * m101@io.com * * suffering is optional
