Lester, Well the way in which it's installed, its *very* difficult to loosen, plus the tech manual showed only a bolt. What tool would you use to remove or loosen that stud so that the cover could be removed, new gasket seated with the new thermostat? It's not reverse threaded either. Among a Ford '86 F-250 diesel, '67 Mustang, '71 Challenger, '68 slant six Dart, '74 318cid Dart, '58 TR-3A, '86 Jeep CJ-7, '86 LaBaron and a few others I've had experience changing thermostats on, NONE had a stud, only bolts. BTW I'm no master mechanic, so save the "odd" sarcasm! Frankly this was the first "flame" I've seen here other than the normal crap between Honda and Mazda owners. It certainly doesn't add much to a discussion and is not what I'd expect in this forum. I do thank you for pointing out that it is what is normally installed however. I'm just like most folks who try to do what they can to learn about their equipment and make minor repairs/mods. Further when I was face-to-face with the service manager and my chosen mechanic Saturday (when making my service appointment), neither flinched at this as not being a "problem". -=[Bob Allman]=- MCA #58517 ---------- From: miata To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: modifying my '96 Date: Monday, June 03, 1996 12:33PM > When trying to install the thermostat I found a piece of threaded stock >with a nut on it in the lower thermostat cover hole instead of a bolt! > Since I'm taking the car in for its 3000 mile service friday I'm having the >dealership remove this crap and install the normal 12mm bolt under warrenty. > Really odd that! > >-=[Bob Allman]=- MCA#58517 '96 Black B+ It's called a stud. Perfectly OK. In fact, it helps to align the gasket. If you think that's odd, I'm sure the dealer will think you are just as odd. IMHO Lester Seal Mass Miata Team APEX 508-229-0090
