No matter how soon you start rubbing the #9, you end up with a pattern of little "dots" that can only be removed with a good deal of work (by hand). I did find that a smooth cotton cloth was more effective than terry cloth, but it makes me nervous to use smooth cloth. This is the second time I used #9; the first time on my new red '96 paint I didn't really do it right.
