This is just a suggestion since I own a 1.6: Remove the plug that looks like

the filler plug, FIRST. If it's not the filler plug you can just put it back

and keep looking (my guess is that it *is* the filler plug). AND, if you

can't get it out, it's better to find that out *now* before you drain your

transmission. I got this handy tip from:  rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled.
