I believe somebody recently posted (or maybe it was on the news group?) that crankcase "flush" products are typically straight kerosene, so the 50/50 mix sounds like a stronger dose of same. Doesn't mean it's safe, but if the flush product really is just kerosene, such a treatment wouldn't be unheard of. I get similar lifter noise when I start my 90,000 mile '90 A, but I'm a little too chicken to do stuff like this.
