Some thoughts from the other side. I am charged $25 for 55 gal of used engine oil by Safety-Kleen. They check it with a sniffer to see if there is excess gasoline in the oil. I am not sure what they charge if they find something. (one reason I would not except oil off the street) I am also charged for oil filter removal. It's not the law, I could throw them in the trash like some of you do, along with the oily rags and diapers used in the process, but I personally do not think that is the right thing to do. Anti-freeze is another waste I could pour down the drain, but would rather pay to have it removed/recycled. I would rather everyone changed their own oil. Less paper work for me, and less liability (who pays if a drain plug falls out or an oil filter blows its seal?). The customers I do change the oil for, know that the underside of the car is checked, the doors are lubed, fluids checked, tire pressure set, tires and brakes visually checked. I have a container full of nails pulled from tires that was noticed during oil changes. I get to know the car over time, and I can keep the customer abreast of any possible problems before they become serious. The customer can then budget accordingly, and not have an expensive surprise. It's more than just an oil change, it's a service. (I know I do not make money on it) Some people enjoy doing the work on their own cars (I know I do). You can save money by changing you own oil, if you have the tools, your time is worth nothing to you, and you don't mind what happens to the waste. IMHO for $25 and 20 min it's a heck of a bargain to have someone do it for you. I do understand though, it's hard and sometimes frustrating to find that right someone, it's easier to trust yourself than a quickie lube, and this is probably the #1 reason people change their own oil.
