Harry, I've seen this problem with about a half dozen Miatas here locally (mine included). In every case, it turned out to be broken wires. Open your trunk and follow the wiring from the trunk brake light down to where the wiring enters the "main harness" under the left rear fender. Look closely and you will probably find that the plastic cover material is all that is "connected" to the main harness and one or both wires are broken away. Mazda's layout in this area is a little poor.
