I've read that this is caused by a minute bit of moisture building up on one of the cards in the radio. There is a fix (I've been too lazy to do it yet). You have to remove the radio and using a piece of wire short between pin #5 & #11 of the black socket. Find someone with the Miata Magazine 1996 TECH issue as they have a one page spread with pictures to guide you through this procedure.
