I don't have the 1.8L but have set timing for others that do. I had a little trouble at first too. If I recall correctly, I use a regular Craftsman wrench but the trick is to put the wrench on and turn the lock bolt as far as you can, then take the wrench off and flip the wrench over, put it back on and twist the lock bolt loose. BTW, I'm not sure that I've ever been able to see it well enough on a 1.8L to tell if its a nut or a bolt. Setting a Miata's timing up sure makes it a lot more enjoyable to drive. I've not done it yet to my 92 automatic. Anybody know how effective it is with the automatic, and does it change the shift points?
