It appears the magnetic pickup helps. My friend Jon (the Miata owner) 

purchased it from Rostra for approx $20 and just finished installing it this 

AM.  So far, no surging -- it had been surging at 40 mph or any speed above. 

 We'll see how it goes on a trip to Houston for Thanksgiving....
