The expensive European car makers (BMW, Mercedes, etc) want to fit their seats with special car seat latches. Sounds like a good idea to me. If you latch in a car seat, it disables the air bag. It also provides a uniform way to attach the car seats. I remember reading that half or more of all the cars seats IN USE where used/installed incorrectly. A universal attachment system would solve this problem as well. I understand the reason for concern for those with rear facing infant seats, but I am still not convinced that air bags are a danger to an older child in a properly installed forward facing seat. I sure wish my Miata had a tilt wheel though, that driver side bag looks like it is aimed at my stomach ! If the universal latch and bypass comes to pass, I can see a new marketing opportunity for Skip Cannon (of "sub-frame brace fame" - try saying THAT 3 times real fast). He can make "dummy buckles" to plug into the latch so it thinks a infant seat is installed - this would disable the air bag. I KNOW that Dan would buy one, since he doesn't "believe" in air bags :-) .
