I obtained some reasonably thick, copper stranded wire (I don't remember the gauge, but slightly thicker than the stock wires) and respliced where the wire had broken. It seemed that the OEM configuration was relatively tight -- i.e., a short stretch of wire (about an inch or two) was taking all the flex. To fix it, I spliced in about a half-foot length to allow the flex to occur along the _entire_ newly spliced area. So far, the repair has functioned without breaking for about a year.
