Ah, but you were doing it wrong! Simply undo the back zippers and diconnect the rear edge of the tonneau first, and you can raise the top while still keeping the interior covered. I had to do this once in a decent rain, and the seats stayed perfectly dry. Elapsed time: about 10 seconds to coverage. Once the top is up, you can sit inside and wrassle with the tonneau.
