Turbocharging my 92 Miata has been occupying my mind for a few months now. It has 27,000 miles on it and is currently completely stock except for Platinum plugs and a 14 degree timing setting. I've owned several RX-7s and several Datsun 2000 Roadsters and even a 57 Porsche Speedster. I also have a 78 Datsun 280Z with a Corvette engine and drivetrain (Maybe I should call it a Corvette with a 280Z body). The Miata is far and away my favourite ride, but I'd like a little more power. Currently, the Bell System lll looks like the best choice, but from reading the List and some Email discussions with a few of you, it appears that Bill Cardell has an interesting variation cooking that promises even more power. I initially looked at the Seabring, but I decided that I'd like a little more power so I kept looking. I even looked at the Greddy Turbo, but it didn't appear to be ready to sell yet as a simple reliable installation. It is certainly the least expensive kit. I also drove over to Huntington Beach to look at a Rod Millen complete 1.6 engine with his turbo installed already. The engine was a 1990 but it was supposed to be brand new with only 127 miles on it. It had lowered compression and the sales guy claimed that it would run at 16 psi boost. When I saw it, it was only set for 12 psi boost and the demo ride was only at high rpm in the lower gears. It was pretty strong, but not awesome. He wanted $4000 for an engine swap, but I decided to pass on it. He probably still has the engine for sale if anyone is interested. Anyway, I looked in the Miata List Archives and I saw a lot of interesting discussion. I also saw some negative comments about discussing supercharging and turbocharging, but I think that the whole purpose of the List is to discuss anything relating to the Miata. Nobody has to read these comments. Anyway, I'd like to hear any pros or cons on the various forced induction systems for the 1.6 Miata before I spend $4000. Ed
