I suspect you're right.  I do recall I went for a year or so without a 

replacement starter (due to economic constraints) and my knuckles were 

bleeding most of the time due to the crank kicking my hand into the 

pavement!  BUT, the used replacement starter was the most expensive thing 

I bought for the MGA!  (Aside from tires.)
