The fix does work for the Miata's 96 radio, but just one type of them. 

In the USA Mazda installed in the Miata one of two radio types:



1.   The older standard radio Mazda's used in the USA since 1989

     (this is the one the fix is for -- it has a black face with

     station selection push buttons in its upper left corner) 



2.   A new type radio Mazda in the USA introduced in 1996 

     (this one has a built-in CD, and I offer no fix for it)

The H.R. fix provides a big improvement in sound quality for the 96's

and all other Miata years if the radio is the older standard one that

Mazda has installed in the USA Miatas since 1989.  The H.R. sound in the

new-for-96 radio is fuller and much better than it is in the older type

non-serviced Miata radio.  From my listening tests Mazda even seems to

get the H.R. wiring correct in the Miatas with the new-for-96 radio

installed -- this is not so in the Miatas with any type of pre-96 radio

Mazda has provided in the USA.

Those who have had my head rest radio service tell me that they prefer

the full audio range sound quality from the head rest speakers -- it

works especially well when driving at speed with the top down.  Again,

Mazda has increased the fullness of the H.R. sound the new-for-96 USA

Miata radio.
