Joe, been there, puzzled over it for two years, and on a tip from my mechanic, found the problem. Bet you dollars to doughnuts it's one, or both, of your taillight gaskets. I had a constant problem with a frost covered trunk lid in winter, wet trunk lid every time it rained, and during one particularly wet week last summer, 3" of water in the jack well on the driver's side of the car, let alone sopping wet carpet everywhere else. If you stick your fingers underneath the electrical connections and along the edge of the metal in the trunk, you'll probably wind that it's wet there. Don't bother tightening the four nuts holding the taillight assembly on, because if the gasket's leaking, it'll just keep on doing so. They're cheap enough, one part number does both sides, and since changing them, haven't had any water problems since.
