Yeah, MS Mail can really stock up on old crap if you let it.  Likewise MS News

and Internet Explorer tend to leave a lot of stuff on your drive over time.  I

think it's a basic Microsoft belief that we all have infinite drive space

available.



Fortunately, all of these programs allow you to do some easy housecleaning

from time to time.  In the case of MS Mail, you have two choices.  First, you

can select File|Folders|Compact, from the pull-down menu.  Compacting all

folders returns a lot of space without ditching anything you might want. 

Next, and more efficient, is deletion.  It's annoying to have to delete

something twice, but you have to.  After you delete your read messages, go to

the "Deleted Items" folder, and delete them from there.  Once done, they are

gone forever.  Don't forget your "Sent Items" folder.  Everything you transmit

out goes there.  Include some attached files on your emails and this folder

can get rather big indeed.



Also, if you haven't already done so, make sure you set your options so that a

copy of your mail is left on the server for some period of time.  I once lost

a bunch of email because of a glitch that reset the computer during the

download, before the messages were written to disk.  I have mine set to delete

them from the server when they are deleted from my "Deleted Items" box, or

after 1 day, whichever comes first.
