On Friday, August 1, 1997 Miatas from around the eastern USA will gather in Tapoco, NC for a weekend event sponsored by the Carolinas Miata Club, and YOU are invited... We will meet at the Tapoco Lodge Resort (Route 72, Box A-1, Tapoco, NC 28771; 1-800-822-5083) on Friday evening. Everyone can get there the best way they can, and we recommend via your Miata - all spiffed up and ready to ride! The Tapoco Lodge is just across the Cheoah River from the Cheoah Dam and about 5 miles from Deal's Gap. The main lodge has 6 rooms and one 2-room suite. They also offer several spacious cottages with 18 additional rooms, all with Air Conditioning. They have a big dining room serving three meals a day and will pack a picnic lunch for you. The game room includes two pool tables, TV, ping-pong and a lighted tennis court is on the grounds. Nearby Nanthahala River has rafting, canoeing and kayaking. There are miles and miles of hiking trails originating on the grounds of the lodge and the Joyce Kilmer National Forest, and the Whitewater adventures on the Ocoee River was home of the '96 Olympic Whitewater Event. CALL THE LODGE FOR YOUR OWN RESERVATIONS! There are NO blocked rooms for this event. (Don't worry - the national Porsche Club meets here annually, too. What's good enough for us ought to be good enough for them!) The Resort is 15 miles north of Robbinsville on Highway 129 and the Cheoah River. Check-in time is noon. They have several packages, some including all meals, or pay as you eat! When you call for the reservation, be sure and request a copy of their brochure and rate schedule. This Lodge is our home base for the entire weekend. We plan to drive Deal's Gap, but have a warning. As a group, we will not be time testing this road - there were 30 accidents there last year, and we'd hate to have a Miata or two involved. The motorcycles who run the Gap stay on the center line a good part of the time, and they ARE out for speed! It's a wonderful drive, and there is a great picnic spot on the other side of the Gap on the lake, so it's a definite must for our group. If anyone wants to re-run the Gap again over the weekend, please note you are on your own, and that run is not a part of this event. This area has Miata roads galore, so plan on at least one follow the leader ride where everyone takes a turn at leading the caravan to....wherever! Please e-mail a message back to me if you plan to attend this event. Include your chapter's name if you are bringing a group. See you in August at Tapoco Lodge! - MaryO
