Yes, this very thing was done by Rod Millen in 1990. A trip up California Hiway 1 in this car was documented in the Fall '90 Miata Mag issue. I remember reading somewhere about what was actually done to the engine but all the article mentioned was the "most of the parts come from the factory-designed 323 GTX engine". I recall that pistons, and cams were used among other parts. It was a runner. BTW, the car graced the Summer issue...arguable one of the best covers, IMHO.
