This sounds like a good case of 'letting someone else touch your car = mistake' The different sized studs and nuts should be on opposing sides = to minimize vibration and out of balance. If they were further from the = pivot point, I'd change them back for sure. Does anyone know the size of the OEM nuts (15mm?). I think this is where my rattle is coming from (note: no shimmy in the ride at all).
