There's a difference between going for maximum performance and just tooling around town. If you're driving aggressively or racing, you want those revs way up there. If you're going from traffic light to traffic light, it's not necessary (although it may be fun). If you're cruising and don't need any great acceleration, you can let the engine live where it's quiet and not straining at the leash. On the highway, definitely hit 5th gear. Baby is optimised to shift at the redline - shifting at 5000 or even 6000 rpm means you're missing a big chunk of power. Mind you, it's not always needed....
