But the single stage stuff is a lot nicer than the clear coat. I would use a single stage paint any day for a solid color, and even some metallics. You can get almost any color mixed in a single stage urethane. The big deal with clear coats was initially that the clear is a UV protecterant. Remember how silver metallic cars, in particular, always got real dull after 3 or 4 years? The clear coats stopped that, but I still think they have a lot of draw backs. My '89 BMW with a single stage paint looked like new after 7 years. My '96 BMW looks like is seven years old after one year just from the chips on the hood. But BMW paint is a hole other story.
