Could there have been a clear coating on the knob which was damaged by

the wheel cleaner?



If not, theres a metal polish called "Simichrome Polish".  It's a paste

that come in what looks like a small toothpaste tube.  Yellow with a

reddish-brown stripe across it.  It works on chrome, silver, aluminum,

etc.  I've used it on chrome bumpers and my wedding ring with

spectacular results.  Should be available at either an autoparts store

or hardware/home improvement store.
