Warning: boring audio stuff to follow, delete now if not interested... Is it just me or was the list just down for 4 days? Anyhoo, since I had a lot of spare time over the weekend, I decided to install a subwoofer in Buster. Since I am not particularly an audiophile and wanted a reversible installation, I decided to go with the SAS 6.5 inch Bazooka Tube sub. I already had a Pioneer DEH-42 CD head unit with Pioneer 5.25 inch 2-way door speakers, but I wanted to hear the bass at speed with the top down. I bought the sub along with a Sony 4x50 watt amp with built in crossover. I constructed a mounting board out of two sheets of Lucite material. I just used nut and bolts to join two 1/8" sheets into a 1/4" sheet (the result looks cool). I then mounted the amp and the sub on the board so I can just disconnect the wires and remove the assembly as one unit. After putting the sub/amp assembly in the trunk and realizing that I didn't cut the Lucite right, I cut it down a bit and now the whole thing sits right down in the depression in the bottom of the trunk. The whole process of wiring the amp took about 4 hours and I spent another 5 hours or so making the Lucite board. The result is a very clean, removable installation that doesn't eat up too much trunk space. The sound? Well, I totally expected the Bazooka to be a little boomy, and it is. But that can be minimized through proper adjustment of levels and crossover points, which I am still doing, and possibly some stuffing of ports, , but I am very happy with the increased bass response (it will shake the whole car). I bridged channels 3 &4 on the amp which is supposed to produce 130 watts continuous for the sub. I am driving the door speakers with channels 1 and 2 on the amp and the headrests are still powered by my head unit (15 watts). On a related subject, I have updated my web page, adding a few pictures of roadsters from around the world (MGF, Fiat Barchetta), and I have added a page recounting the mods I have made to my Miata. Pictures of said mods will come soon, just follow the link about half way down the front page at the address in my sig line. Sorry in advance for the excessive amount of graphics on the front page, it will be slow to load on some machines.
