Hi Gang, Third Installment: Wed. June 25, 1997 Since Drifter’s windshield and front bumper were encrusted with insects from the 1,848 mile trip, we made a stop at the do-it-yourself car wash after supper at Wendy’s last night, which certainly improved his appearance. We had another great day of traveling today. We left St. George, UT and covered 522 miles today. Total distance traveled from Cincinnati to Buellton was 2,370 miles. More great scenery, but because of high temperatures predicted to be in the 100 - 103 deg. F. range, we kept the top up. I-15 was really neat this morning, when it leaves Utah it passes through the northwest corner of Arizona for 27 miles then enters Nevada. In this area it passes through a very impressive canyon. Although the speed limit was 55 the light traffic permitted much higher speeds which made the trip more fun, but sightseeing was essentially impossible. When we got to Victorville, south of Barstow, we got off the Interstate and headed for Palmdale, Saugus and Ventura, where we met up with US 101 which took us to Santa Barbara. Between Saugus and Ventura we passed through orange groves which seemed ready for harvest and in some of the median strips dividing the highway there were huge flower-covered shrubs. There are many things in California which don’t seem real. At Santa Barbara we took CA 154 over the 3,000 ft. elev. San Marcos Pass, past the Flag is Up Farm to the Windmill Motor Inn in Buellton. Drifter performed flawlessly and he is currently resting outside my window. After arriving at the Motel I discovered that the phones are hard-wired and the desk clerk informed me that plugging in my computer to a phone line would not be possible. Needless to say my attempt to get on-line was unsuccessful last night. To date I’ve been in only one motel that had a phone system which would let me log on the Internet. I’m going to bring my computer to the farm tomorrow and see if someone will take pity on me and provide a phone connection. The really annoying part of this is the fact that on these otherwise free evenings I could be reading the list traffic, but I can’t get it. Oh well... Regards, Bill Bowser & Drifter In Buellton CA
