the stock '91 radios don't have a remote turn on lead, unfortunately. :-( You could run to an accessory lead, so the antenna went up and down with the key. Don't know that there's one close by in the trunk, though. To remove the fixed antenna, first unscrew the staff with a 10mm wrench. Then, gently use a large, flat-bladed screwdriver to unscrew the black grommet-thingy surrounding the antenna base. Be careful not to scratch stuff. Once you lift off that piece, look in the trunk. You'll see the antenna base bolted to a bar next to the battery. Remove that bolt and you should be able to pull the antenna assembly down and out. You may need to remove the battery and spare to get to it, though. If you don't already have a power antenna picked out, pay careful attention to the size when shopping. There's not a lot of space under there. Good luck! Todd & Miatoy P.S. If you don't want to go to the expense to replace the antenna, you can still easily remove the shaft, as described above, to put the car cover on. It's pretty quick if you keep a 10mm wrench handy in the car. That's a least a good interim step, to let you go ahead and start using the cover, eh? ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Fwd: Power antenna Author: Corey1NYC@aol.com at P_ONS_INTERNET_MAIL Date: 7/7/97 3:08 PM --------------------- Forwarded message: Subj: Power antenna Date: 97-07-03 21:19:15 EDT From: Corey1 NYC To: miata@realbig.com Has anyone converted from a fixed antenna to a power one? My '91 BRG came with a fixed antenna that I'd like to convert to a fully auto one because I cover my car with a car cover every time I park it. I've just bought a new cover and I'm NOT going to cut a hole in it for the antenna . I need to know: 1- If there is a factory wiring connector in the trunk so I don't have to run the turn on lead from the radio 2-How the heck do I remove the stock antenna? Oh, by the way, I tried to look this up on Listserve but I got an error, something about nothing found that matches my entry. Strange. Then I entered the word MIATA, and after a two second wait .....It said the SAME thing! I guess that I'm just dreaming! I thought I had a Miata in my parking space ;-)
